CAPTURED MOMENTS

TIME TO CAPTURE THAT SPECIAL DAY. DAVID FERNÁNDEZ SHOWS HIS PHOTOGRAPHY OF LOVE

Where is home?
I am currently living in Asturias, the north of Spain.

What sort of work do you specialise in?
My professional career has been connected to the publicity in Madrid and Barcelona. Four years ago I came back to Asturias, where I enjoy telling love stories with my wedding photography.

How long have you been a photographer?
I started as a professional photographer in 2009, doing my first job in the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, for a very popular brand. I could say that I am closely linked to the photography since there.

How would you describe your style?
It is difficult for me to describe my photos, as I concentrate more on telling beautiful stories with them. Probably showing another point of view different from mine is the best way to describe my style.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?
I use a Leica M10 together with a Summilux 35mm for my most delicate and personal jobs and in conjunction with two Canons for my wedding jobs.

What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Without any doubt my Leica Sofort. I really love taking different photos from the ones I already shoot with the rest of my cameras. To be able to see, “click” and a photo instantly pops out now thats just magical.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
With our a doubt the 35mm Summilux. It enables me to do portraits and add a little bit more breathing space for landscapes too. Apart from being so polyvalent during my trips it does not break away from my M10.

What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot?
Most of my jobs are done with natural light, but there are some situations where I use artificial light. I have two Profoto B2 flashes for Canon, and a Canon Speedlite 580Ex flash for hand using.

Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during a shoot?
It depends on the job or on the client that I’m working for. In publicity it is very important that the colours are very high contrasting. That’s why I normally use flash, even though lately some brands prefer natural light outdoors. The flash I work with is a Profoto B2 and that kind of systems allows you to create the atmospheres you want, without paying attention to the sun direction or the time it is, but you can use it also as another point of light.

Personally, what I like the most is natural light, analyze the kind of light or the strength the sun has at the specific country I am at the moment, move myself and see how the light changes or going out at a concret time for using the resources I have.

What gives you ideas and inspires you to create such great imagery?
I really love travel, and that allows my mind to flow with ideas. Finding new places makes me think differently about my shots i take. Travel magazines, Pinterest or the cinema are some of the ways I use for inspiring myself.

What has been your most memorable assignment and why?
Apart from the many jobs that I have done with various publications and digital media companies. My works from a Iceland trip a few weeks ago have been most memorable thus far, as it has changed my perception of how I see my photography.

Where would be your dream destination assignment?
I would really enjoy working in Tibet, Nepal, Peru, South Africa or the Maldives.

What is your favourite image you have shot recently? Can you describe its creation in regards to location, lighting, composition etc., also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?
At the moment i have been editing photos from a job in Iceland, and I am completely in love with the place. I love the amazing Jokulsarlon bay. The volcanic black sand and the polar iced caps made the place one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. I always aim to get compositions perfect. The bride and the groom placed in the middle together with the horizon, find the perfect moment and hear the “clack” of my Leica.

What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?
Learn as much as you can. We live surrounded by visual content that teach us how to process things, but the way you observe the world is in your hands. I recommend traveling lots, create your own adventures you want to remember forever. All this will help you reach real happiness and push you to make amazing photos. Take loads of photos and find your style, that style is what is going to define you and make you unique among the rest.
